The New York Yankees made a notable roster move as they wrap up one of the most disappointing seasons in franchise history.
Ahead of their Tuesday evening game against the Detroit Tigers, the Yankees announced that they have released infielder and 2015 AL MVP Josh Donaldson.
Per SNY’s Andy Martino, Donaldson will become a free agent tomorrow if he isn’t picked up off waivers. It’s unlikely that any team will claim Donaldson, since he’s still on the 60-day IL and not eligible to return until mid-September.
Donaldson’s release isn’t exactly surprising, given the well-documented struggles of the three-time All-Star this season. The former Toronto Blue Jays’ franchise player hit a woeful .142 in 33 games for the Pinstripes, with 10 homers, 15 RBI and a .659 OPS.
The 37-year-old Donaldson also had problems putting the ball in play, striking out a whopping 32 times in 120 plate appearances. These numbers are simply well off his career .262 batting average and .849 OPS.

The Blue Jays make sense as a potential landing spot for Donaldson, with third baseman Matt Chapman and Bo Bichette both recently being placed on the 10-day injured list. They enter play on Tuesday 2.5 games out of the final wild card spot in the AL.
