The St. Louis Cardinals have been arguably baseball’s most disappointing team in 2023. Let’s just say their loss to the Miami Marlins on Wednesday night is a perfect summary of their season to date.
St. Louis carried a 9-8 lead into the bottom half of the ninth inning. The Marlins were threatening with runners on first and second and just one out. Sure enough, the Cardinals found a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
Joey Wendle hit a soft roller to Cardinals’ pitcher Jordan Hicks, who inexplicably double-clutched before finally going to first base. But Hicks’ throw to first baseman Paul Goldschmidt was absolutely dreadful, and it sailed over the latter’s head.
That allowed Miami to plate two runs to complete the comeback.
And that, folks, is the 2023 Cardinals in a nutshell.
With the loss, the Cardinals dropped to 35-51 on the year. They enter Thursday 12.5 games behind the Cincinnati Reds for first in the NL Division, and 11.5 games out of the third and final wild card spot.

The Cardinals haven’t endured a losing season since 2007, but that streak is all but sure to end this year. It would take a miraculous second-half turnaround just to finish above .500, but games like Wednesday’s affair in Miami was a strong reminder that it most certainly won’t happen.
