The 2024 Winter Meetings have already heated things around Dallas. The latest acquisition for the Atletics came in handy as they landed Tampa Bay Rays Jeffrey Springs. The A’s have gotten their hands on Springs, who is set to enjoy $10.5 million in both of the coming years. He also has a $15 million option due for 2027.
With all that trade jargon already on the web, the Athletics fans are really getting curious about the value the North Carolina-born lefty is bringing with him.

Springs had an impressive performance during his shortened 2024 season after recovering from Tommy John surgery. In seven starts for the Rays, Springs posted a solid 3.27 ERA with 37 strikeouts and issued 11 walks over 33 innings pitched. His effective return to the mound came after a lengthy recovery from the surgery he underwent in April 2023, which cut his previous season short.
Jeffrey Springs was elite for the Rays in 2022, going 9-5 with a 2.46 ERA over 144 innings. He started 25/33 games he appeared in. In 2023 signed a 4-year $31 million in 2023. Before his injury, Springs had been considerably promising. He allowed only one earned run with 24 strikeouts over his first 16 innings of the 2023 season. In terms of his overall career stats, Springs had a great season in 2022, when he posted a phenomenal 2.46 ERA over 135.1 innings. All thanks to the performance, which led him to a four-year, $31 million contract extension with the Rays in January 2023.
Though his average fastball velocity went down to 89.8 mph in 2024, the Athletics are optimistic that he can return to pre-injury velocity levels of around 91-92 mph. His repertoire includes an elite changeup complemented by a fastball, slider, and sweeper, and with a solid track record behind him.

Athletics Are Focusing On Their Starting Rotation With Jeffrey Springs
The Oakland Athletics have revamped their starting rotation. The team is preparing to relocate to Sacramento for the next three years. They already broke the news by signing right-hander Luis Severino from the Mets and acquiring left-hander Jeffrey Springs from the Rays. The optimistic deals resulted in the A’s investing a combined $30.5 million in their pitching staff for the upcoming season.
Given the team’s past performance, they are not letting it slip off when they struggled to invest adequately during a disappointing stretch that saw them go 179-307. Their 2025 rotation lineup will feature Severino as the ace, along with Springs, JP Sears, Joey Estes, and Mitch Spence.
LOOKING BETTER AND BETTER! I DO NOT HAVE SPENCE STARTING. I THINK HE IS SO MUCH MORE EFFECTIVE OUT OF THE BULLPEN. ALTERNATING RIGHTIES AND LEFTIES IN ROTATION, THE ONLY REASON ESTES AHEAD OF SPRINGS. pic.twitter.com/lLrhN0lvzf

Severino, once a top pitcher with the Yankees, is looking to build on a strong 2024 season, while Springs hopes to bounce back from injury setbacks. JP Sears is the most established returning starter, having made 32 starts in each of the last two seasons. The younger pitchers, Estes and Spence, are also coming off their rookie years and will add depth to the rotation.
