The New York Mets are navigating free agency very strategically. First, with Juan Soto and now with Jared Young, the team has a set of parallel reasonings. While they still have the money to evaluate a few more options, the Mets are focused on any potential gaps in their lineup.
The newly signed infielder is on a one-year major league contract. The 29-year-old Young brings a wealth of experience primarily spent in the Minors. He is coming off with a healthy .326 batting average and a .420 on-base percentage. The Mets would surely be looking to make the most out of him as a hitter and as a reliable option in late-game situations. With 22 games of Major League experience and a solid OPS of .725, Young can provide the Mets with a versatile and impactful bench bat. However, the numbers are not in this deal, as the signing price has not been disclosed.

The ultimate impact of Young’s signing will largely depend on the Mets’ further roster moves this offseason. And it has a lot to do with how their promising prospects perform during the spring training. The list includes names such as Ronny Mauricio and Luisangel Acuña. Young’s presence, alongside another depth addition, Joey Meneses, creates a competitive environment that could push all players to elevate their performance.
Should Young prove himself in camp, he could not only secure a spot on the Major League roster. Additionally, he will also function as a critical support piece throughout the season. The Mets would also utilize him to maintain optimal performance when faced with injuries or poor play among incumbents.
Jared Young Has A Lot To Offer
The Soto deal gave the Mets a positive edge during the Winter Meetings. Their freshly landed bet on Young comes with a notable pedigree. The Canadian, who was drafted in the 15th round by the Chicago Cubs out of Old Dominion University in 2017, made his MLB debut in 2022.
During his two seasons with the Cubs, he recorded a .725 OPS with two home runs across 69 plate appearances. After struggling to secure a permanent spot with the Cubs in 2023, Young sought opportunities abroad, playing for the Doosan Bears in the Korean Baseball Organization.

Young found success there with an impressive 1.080 OPS before returning to the States to play for the Memphis Red Birds. He homered 11 times and recorded a .917 OPS in 74 games for them.
With the Mets, Young brings offensive depth and also possesses the versatility to play multiple positions on the field as a utility player. Throughout his career, Young has appeared in games at first base, left field, second base, third base, and right field. And that is what he will be expected to carry forward.
