Baltimore Orioles’ rookie phenom Gunnar Henderson added another highlight reel to his library on Friday night.
In the bottom of the fourth inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Henderson made a tough over-the-shoulder catch to retire Nick Ahmed. He then turned and made a quick throw at home plate to double up Corbin Carroll, who attempted to tag up from third:
What can we say? The kid can play.
The Diamondbacks upset the Orioles 4-2, thanks to a strong outing by pitcher Zach Davies (six innings pitched, six strikeouts and just one earned run). The two sides will complete their three-game series on Sunday.
The 22-year-old has been a key reason for the Orioles’ success here in 2023. Entering play on Saturday, Henderson is batting .254 with 22 homers and an OPS of .813 to go along with a ridiculous WAR of 4.7.
Baltimore is set to end a six-year playoff drought, and they’re looking to win the franchise’s first AL East division title since 2014. They’re 1.5 up on the Tampa Bay Rays for the division lead as well as the AL’s top seed, which would give them a first-round bye into the ALDS.
