Andrew McCutchen is back with the Pittsburgh Pirates for the 2025 season, and his fans couldn’t be any happier. The 38-year-old signed a one-year deal worth $5 million with the team while returning to the team where he earned star status.
Excited about his latest signing, McCutchen opened up about his wish to finish his career at Pittsburgh, and luckily, the Pirates took notes. Team GM Ben Cherington also expressed his excitement and mentioned how the Pirates would utilize Andrew for skills and as a mentor for the youngsters.
McCutchen is coming off a good year as he hit 20 home runs that also added up to his 300th career homer. He also achieved a solid .739 OPS. However, this is a commendable stat considering his last year’s Achilles tear. The injury had him limited action on the field, but his bat swing efficiency barely declined.

Other than his recent showings, Andrew has a long resume of work proofs. He has an NL MVP award to his name that he got in 2013, along with five consecutive All-Star selections from 2011-2015. He played nine seasons for the Pirates before going for his stints with the San Fransisco Giants, the New York Yankees, the Philadelphia Phillies, and the Milwaukee Brewers. Now that he is in his 17th major league season, McCutchen is set to don the black and gold once more.
How Could Pittsburgh Pirates Utilize Andrew McCutchen In 2025
Bringing Andrew McCutchen back to the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2025 is like a homecoming for both of them. After all these years, seeing him back in a Pirates uniform just feels right. As he will be on his 12th season run with the team, it’s likely he’ll be taking on the role of designated hitter again. Last season, he showed us he could still swing the bat with power and belted out 20 home runs while consistently getting on base.

However, McCutchen isn’t just about his numbers; his experience at the plate can be a big boost for the younger guys on the roster. He can lend his support in the batting lineup and share his deep knowledge of the game, which can only help the team grow.
Beyond his hitting, McCutchen’s presence on the team can be invaluable as a mentor. Having been the face of the franchise during its past playoff runs, he truly understands what it takes to compete at the highest level. His guidance is essential as the Pirates aim to climb back into contention.
