Pete Alonso and the New York Mets have a strong history, but a reunion seems slipping away. Alonso was eager to join the Mets but at a cost that could not be reached until now. The Mets caught the biggest fish in the free agent market, and Alonso’s future in Queens is questionable.
Steve Cohen was unhappy with the way Alonso’s free agency was heading. After his statement, it’s clear that the Mets are looking at other options. The Mets are all set to be a top playoff contender with or without Alonso. After getting Juan Soto, they have not gone all-out to pursue Alonso.
Mets pitcher Jerry Blevins says it would be awkward if the team re-sings Pete Alonso. Blevins thinks that Alonso’s ego and the addition of Soto will make things hard in the clubhouse.
“Pete’s been basically the face of the Mets for his entire career. He was like the superstar then. But now you’ve got Lindor, you’ve got Nimmo as your veteran voice, and you bring in a superstar like Soto,” Blevins said.
Blevins further said spring training would be strange for Alonso even if the Mets bring him back.
“There’s potential for it to be a little awkward if the Mets re-sign him, it will be with open arms, but the first few days in spring training might be a little strange,” Blevins continued.

Scott Boras’ Strategy May Be Hurting Pete Alonso
Alonso’s agent, Scott Boras, has played a crucial role in Alonso’s free agency. Boras is known for closing huge deals, but Alonso’s free agency is heading into spring training. The Mets were predicted to sign Alonso right after the 2024 season.
After acquiring Soto, things have taken a drastic turn for “Polar Bear.” Alonso will sign with a team one way or the other, but it might not be the Mets. The first baseman is one of the top free agents available in the market.
A number of teams, including the Blue Jays, have been linked to Pete Alonso. Many believe that Alonso is desperately hoping to return to the Mets.
