If things do not turn fast and favorable, turning down the $156 million offer would be the worst mistake Alex Bregman has ever made. It might sound like a strong statement, but it has been like this throughout free agency.
Former Miami Marlins president David Samson recently weighed in on Bregman’s free agency situation. He suggested that the star third baseman may have made a big mistake by turning down a six-year, $156 million offer from the Houston Astros last December. Samson believes that Bregman and his agent, Scott Boras, misjudged the market by expecting teams to pay over $200 million for him.
Instead, he warns that there doesn’t seem to be any team willing to step up and give Bregman the contract he wants right now. And all that quest for more millions has put him in a tough spot as spring training approaches.
“Alex Bregman is not getting the deal he wanted. There’s not a team that’s going to stand up and say ‘We’ve had it wrong the whole time. Here we are, approaching spring training, give that man his Oreos. There is no team that will sign Alex Bregman for the contract Boras promised him or that he wants,” Samson said.
Samson advises Bregman to consider accepting a shorter-term deal that would allow him to prove himself again on the field. He suggests that a one-year contract with an option to opt-out might be the best option for Bregman.
“Don’t you think it would behoove you to sign somewhere, take the short-term deal with the one-year opt-out, play your tuchus off, hit another 30 to 35 bombs, play great defense at third baseman, then opt out after tampering, and see if you can’t be Matt Chapman?” he added.

Alex Bregman Leaves Astros Behind As He Narrows Down His List
While rumors have it for long that Houston Astros are the one for Bregman, now they are not. The star third baseman’s potential reunion with the team has come to an unexpected end. It came in the wake of his focus shift to the Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox, and Detroit Tigers.
Today Alex Bregman reportedly narrowed his list of finalists to 3. Cubs, Red Sox & Tigers. I believe he will go short term with an opt out.

Thoughts #Astros fans ? Ready to turn the page?
The latest development surfaced after months of speculation about whether the two-time All-Star would return to the team where he found significant success. After rejecting an earlier offer from the Astros, he subsequently turned down additional negotiations.
For the Astros, Bregman’s departure is not entirely a shock, especially given their strategic moves in the offseason. In preparation for the possibility of losing their star infielder, they acquired All-Star Isaac Paredes and signed slugger Christian Walker. With a full infield already in place, bringing Bregman back would have likely required adjusting the defensive lineup.
