Some awful and heartbreaking news has come out of the baseball world.
On Sunday afternoon, the Boston Red Sox announced on social media that former star pitcher Tim Wakefield has passed away following a courageous battle with brain at the age of 57.
Wakefield’s MLB career began with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1992. He spent two seasons there before joining the Red Sox in 1995. The Melbourne, Florida native would play there until 2011, helping Boston to World Series championships in 2004 (their first in 86 years) and 2007.
For his countless contributions off the field, Wakefield was named the winner of the Roberto Clemente Award in 2010. He won 200 games and racked up 2,156 strikeouts over his career.
Wakefield is survived by his wife, Stacy, and two children. Our thoughts and prayers are with Wakefield, his family and friends as well as the Red Sox organization during this heartbreaking time.
