The biggest save of Saturday’s Giants-Nationals game did not occur on the field.
During the contest, a woman began choking, and her friend tried helping her out, but the situation was steadily getting worse. Dr. Willie Ross, the father of MLB veteran Tyson Ross and Nationals pitcher Joe Ross, immediately jumped into action and performed the Heimlich Maneuver and saved that woman’s life.
“A woman needed the Heimlich at Oracle Park and a Nationals fan rushed over and helped her,” wrote Nationals beat writer Jesse Dougherty, via Twitter. “He got a big cheer and some others are now shaking his hand. Thankfully, she seems to be doing okay.
“Just put two and two together. This was Joe Ross’s dad, who is a doctor. Hero at the ballpark today.”
“I went over to check and she couldn’t talk,” Ross said during the game at Oracle Park, Ross on hand to watch his son’s team. “She had three pieces of hot dog lodged in there.”

Ross, a pediatrician at Stanford Hospital who trained in ER medicine, had to perform the Heimlich three times before it cleared the woman’s throat.
“The third piece came out the size of my thumb — like the first knuckle — and then she said, ‘I can talk,’” said Ross.
The saved woman was actually a retired nurse who worked in Oakland.
Giants went on to win the game 10-4.
