The Pirates drafted Skenes with the first overall pick in 2023, but it was announced on Tuesday that he’ll begin the 2024 season in the minors. Skenes is still a likely candidate to be called up at some point this year.
The 28-year-old Rosario split the 2023 season with the Cleveland Guardians and Los Angeles Dodgers, who acquired him via trade ahead of the deadline. Rosario signed a one-year pact with the Rays late last month after spending three months on the open market.
Rosario had his best season with Cleveland back in 2022, when he hit .283 with an OPS of .715. He finished with a wins-above-replacement of 4.1, far and away the best single-season mark of his career to date.
For his career, Rosario is a .272 hitter with a .708 OPS, 60 homers and 334 RBI. He joins a Rays team that is looking to win its second straight AL East division crown, as well as their first playoff series since 2020.
