The Miami Marlins have not made significant roster changes this offseason. While several teams, such as the Yankees, Dodgers, and Mets, are going all out to bring in top talent, Miami seems to be taking it slow.
It’s almost a week past the New Year, and spring training is less than 90 days away. The question is, are they really going to pursue some free-agent players? Most importantly, did they really spend $0 this offseason? Let’s find out.
How Much Did The Marlins Spend This Offseason?
The franchise was not involved with free agents, but they did make a transaction. Miami had a split contract for infielder Eric Wagaman. The team signed Wagaman to a one-year deal, but it does not contribute to their major league payroll. Hence, they have not spent any money on free agents or other notable trades.
The team is keen on maintaining its current roster and is not interested in high-profile agents. Furthermore, it is more focused on minor-league signings. Making the playoffs in 2025 can be challenging, especially if it is coming in with the same players. However, Miami seems to have a strategy in place to build on its future team by investing in new talent.

Miami Marlins Are Not The Only Team To Spend Less
Surprisingly, Miami is not the only team among the cheapest spenders this offseason. The Seattle Mariners have not pursued high-profile players and have not spent a single dollar on any player this offseason.
The Mariners are also expected to stay out of the free-agent race and continue with the same players for 2025. While this might surprise many, both teams are looking for a different approach to growing younger talent.

The Marlins have given away several top players already since the 2024 season. They parted ways with Jazz Chisholm Jr., Luis Arraez, Tanner Scott, Jesus Luzado, and more. While the approach might not have an immediate effect, the team believes it could pay off in the future.
Miami and Seattle are the only teams that might not spend for the rest of this offseason. As for the other teams, some are in hot pursuit of top free-agent slugger Alex Bregman.
