Remember those jokes about how the MLB season wouldn’t happen and the Dodgers would never see Mookie Betts play for them? Those jokes can be deleted now.
Not only will there be a season, but Mookie is expected to be around a lot longer than just this 60-game season.
According to a report from Red Sox insider Lou Merloni, Betts is close to an extension with the Dodgers that will earn up upwards of $350 million over at least 10 years.
“Mookie will remain in LA for a very very long time,” Merloni said on Twitter earlier this morning. “10+ yrs for BIG $$. Between 350-400 [million].”
The Dodgers paid a significant price in prospects and took on a lot of salary in order to secure just one season from the 27-year-old, so it makes sense that the organization was planning for a more long-term plan to keep Beets aboard.
However, until the paperwork is complete, Betts stands as the obvious top talent of the 2020-21 free agent class.
