The thing about these daytime baseball games is the players and umpires have to get up so early, that it’s understandable why some of them may be grumpy by the time the first pitch is thrown.
That appeared to be the case with Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Madison Bumgarner and the umpiring crew working their game against the Miami Marlins today, as it didn’t take long for tensions to boil over. Following a one-run first inning, Bumgarner appeared to have some words for home plate umpire Ryan Willis.
Then, when he stopped to get his hand checked for illegal substances by first base umpire Dan Bellino, the two of them appeared to exchange words, causing Bellino to toss the three-time World Series champion.
Feeling as though he hadn’t quite made his point yet, Bumgarner exploded on Bellino, making his ejection well worth it with his verbal tirade.
No word on exactly what caused Bumgarner to blow up. He did have some words for Willis earlier in the inning after feeling as though he wasn’t given a close pitch to the Marlins’ Garrett Cooper.

It’s very likely that he didn’t appreciate the explanation he got from Willis, or the extra input he received from Bellino during his hand check. Bumgarner was replaced by Corbin Martin to begin the second inning.
