Tony La Russa was charged with driving under the influence after he allegedly ran his car into a curb in February 2020.
It was the second known drunken driving arrest for the Chicago White Sox manager, who in 2007 pleaded guilty to misdemeanor DUI in Jupiter, Florida.
La Russa is back in the news this week after WGN News obtained dashcam footage of that night. In the video below, officers asked if he had any drinks that night. He replied, “no.”
“I’m with the Angels, I’m a Hall of Famer,” he said.
At one point, he actually tried to smell his own breath to see how much alcohol they would likely smell on him.

In a statement, the White Sox said La Russa expressed remorse after the resolution of his case.
“As he stated in December 2020 at the resolution of his case, Tony La Russa expressed embarrassment, deep remorse and contrition for his actions that evening. He also completed the terms of his sentence. After already publicly addressing this matter and taking responsibility for his actions — which resulted in a plea agreement for reckless driving — it is unclear to us how the release of this video today qualifies as being newsworthy. We prefer to focus on continuing to improve as people, as a team and as an organization, both on and off the field.”
The 76-year-old Hall of Famer currently has the White Sox with a 33-22 record, which is good for first place in the AL Central.
