The San Diego Padres and Cincinnati Reds went to battle on the field Tuesday night, but a controversial slide at the plate almost made that battle turn into a fistfight.
In the first inning of the game, Padres designated hitter Luke Voit attempted to beat a close play at home plate, but he made major contact with Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson, who stayed down on the ground for awhile after the hit.
Following the game, Reds left fielder Tommy Pham threatened to fight Voit and even suggested using mixed martial arts to get the job done.
“If Luke wants to settle it, I get down really well,” Pham said via Reds reporter C. Trent Rosencrans. “Anything. Muay Thai, whatever. Like I said, I’ve got an owner here who will let me use his facility. So f*** ’em. I’m out.”
The Padres would win the game 6-2 and drop the Reds to a 2-10 record on the year.
