The Boston Red Sox have yet to make a huge move that will shock everyone this offseason. MLB free agent rumors continue to swirl around multiple players, and teams like Boston are linked to top sluggers. Alex Bregman and Pete Alonso are considered the top free-agent sluggers who have yet to find a team.
Bregman was predicted to sign before 2025. However, his free agency continues with tough competition. The Houston Astros seem to have dropped out on Bregman, but Boston became the front runners. Yet, they have not progressed with an offer for the All-Star.
MLB insider Ken Rosenthal believes the Red Sox has not done much this offseason, especially being a big-market team. Rosenthal thinks the team is afraid of bad deals, which is why it is reluctant to sign Alex Bregman.
“I think they are afraid of a bad deal. They’ve had some bad deals in recent years. Yoshida was one, and Chris Sale was another. It was a bad deal for them, especially the way it worked out. Trevor Story has not worked out to their satisfaction. So you can understand ownership’s reluctance,” Rosenthal said.
Red Sox And Garrett Crochet Set For Contract Extension
While Boston is playing the waiting game for Bregman, they are ready to retain Garrett Crochet. The latest update from Boston is that they have discussed a contract extension with Crochet. The team settled for a $3.8 million deal with the pitcher to avoid arbitration.
Crochet wants to sign an extension, and it seems to be mutual. The Red Sox need a left-handed pitcher like Crochet to bolster their starting rotation. With Walker Buehler on the squad, they hope to turn things around and make the playoffs in 2025.

The biggest issue is that they miss out on a strong offensive bat. Bregman will be the perfect match for the team, but as Rosenthal says, they are still reluctant. Not long ago, they were in the market for Juan Soto. Surprisingly, the Red Sox are taking time to sign players like Bregman. The former Astros star is also predicted to ink a short-term deal with a surprise NL Central team.
