Bobby Bonilla continues to rack in the dough.
One collector spent $180,000 at auction for one of the most famous contracts in baseball history. Bonilla’s deal with the New York Mets gets recognition thanks to the yearly reminders every July 1, also known as “Bobby Bonilla Day.”
A part of the contract that Bobby Bonilla signed in 1999 was sold via collectibles marketplace Goldin for $180,000, according to ESPN. Bonilla put his copy of the six-page addendum up for auction, along with several other items as part of a “Bobby Bonilla Day” experience.
The Mets owe Bonilla $1,193,248.20 every July 1 through 2035 as part of their agreement when New York released Bonilla following the 1999 season. Bonilla’s agent, Dennis Gilbert, possessed the contract until the auction.
The auction winner did get a variety of other prizes, including a signed baseball, a game-used bat and a one-of-one Bobby Bonilla contract NFT. They will also have a Zoom call with Bonilla.
The package features a day with Bonilla and a Mets game at Citi Field.
