The exterior of Fenway Park now features a massive Black Lives Matter banner that is 252 feet long, 20 feet high. The Boston Red Sox, who shared a photo of the banner a couple of days before the start of the abbreviated 2020 MLB season, appear to be taking the next step in their push against racism.
The backlash to the banner has been swift and constant as fans of the team claim they will no longer be fans going forward due to the team supporting the BLM movement.
Leading the rush is former San Francisco Giants star Aubrey Huff who took to Twitter and called for a outright boycott of the sport.
“Hey @RedSox….may as well paint on the green monster in bold lettering, “We disrupt the Western-prescribed nuclear family.”
That statement is literally on the #BlackLivesMattter website. #BoycottMLB @MLB”
The Red Sox in June released a statement that acknowledged a history of racial slurs aimed at both Black players and Black employees at Fenway Park, and that the injustices are “a reflection of larger systemic issues.” Some of those issues are evident in the comments below the tweet in which the Red Sox shared the photo of the new Black Lives Matter banner.
