Without a doubt, no Major League Baseball umpire finds himself in as much controversy and public backlash as 61-year-old Ángel Hernández.
The veteran umpire has been with Major League Baseball since 1991. He has committed a plethora of questionable/blown calls throughout his 30-plus-year career in baseball, but Saturday’s game between the New York Yankees and Miami Marlins might be his worst single-game performance yet.
According to the popular Umpire Auditor account, which tracks and reviews the performances of MLB umpires, Hernández had 15 blown calls in Saturday’s game. The account shared a video below of Hernández missing several obvious strike calls while also giving Miami pitcher Sandy Alcántara some extremely generous calls.
Have a look for yourself:
Thanks to a very inconsistent strike zone from Hernández, Alcántara was able to pull off the rare MLB feat in this day an age by throwing a complete game. He allowed just five hits and one run while striking out 10 in Miami’s 3-1 victory, as the Marlins moved to 61-57 on the year.
The Marlins won the rubber match 8-7 on Sunday.
