A blockbuster trade proposal has the New York Mets sending veteran pitcher Luis Severino to a top American League team in a move that could shake up the 2024 World Series race.
For much of the first half of the season, the Mets were widely expected to be a top seller before Tuesday’s trade deadline. That firesale would have presumably included Luis Severino, but the surging Mets (55-50) will need a lucrative offer now to trade anyone of value.
The Mets’ pitching has been a problem this year, but Severino (7-3 with a 3.58 ERA) has been one of the more reliable arms. Though the Mets would obviously love to buy and continue their playoff push, president of baseball operations David Stearns might end up getting an offer he can’t refuse for the two-time All-Star.
Jim Bowden of The Athletic recently proposed a blockbuster trade idea that would see the Mets send Luis Severino to the AL East-leading Baltimore Orioles for pitching prospect Trace Bright and outfield prospect Jud Fabian:
“Luis Severino is a perfect fit based on his past experience in the AL East with the Yankees…He will be a free agent after this season and should do well on the open market if he maintains this level.
In return, the Mets would acquire Trace Bright, a fifth-round pick in 2022 out of Auburn who is one of the Orioles’ top pitching prospects…In addition, the Mets would get outfielder Jud Fabian…He is expendable because of the plethora of outfield prospects the Orioles rate above him.”

The Orioles (62-43) are one game ahead of Severino’s former team, the New York Yankees, for first place in the American League East. The deadline is a golden opportunity for O’s GM Mike Elias to make a move that could widen the cap with the Pinsrtipes, and Severino would fill Baltimore’s need for another strong arm in the rotation.
Only the Cleveland Guardians (63-42) have a better record than Baltimore in the American League. However, one more quality starting pitcher of Severino’s caliber could push Baltimore over the top in the crowded AL.
Luis Severino Is Enjoying A Strong Bounce-Back Season
The Yankees decided not to bring back Severino after a rough 2023 season that saw him go 4-8 with a 6.65 ERA and a 1.65 WHIP.
But the 30-year-old has shown that 2023 was simply an off year and not a sign of a rapid decline. The former Yankee is on track to finish with double-digit wins for the first time since 2018.
