To conclude the 2024 MLB season, you must grade the managers after grading the team. So here are the final grades for all 30 MLB managers in 2024.
Who are the top MLB managers in the 2024 season?
Arizona Diamondbacks – Torey Luvollo B+
Luvollo managed to get the Diamondbacks back into playoff contention one season after losing in the World Series. Considering they had multiple injuries early in the 2024 MLB season, they seemed dead, but Luvollo kept them together and competitive.
Atlanta Braves – Brian Snitker: A+
The Braves lost three of their best hitters midseason and still made the playoffs, thanks to Stinker. He did an excellent job of managing the bullpen when the offense struggled.
Baltimore Orioles – Brandon Hyde: B+
The Orioles were one of the best teams all season, but Hyde did miss their season goal of winning the AL East. That would also hurt them in the postseason because they needed the first-round bye more than anyone.

Boston Red Sox – Alex Cora: C+
The Red Sox had both their offense and defense spend part of the year struggling, and the other half succeeded. In the end, Cora’s failure to get both units in sync is why they finished 81-81.
Chicago Cubs – Craig Counsell: B+
In Counsell’s first year, he finished above .500 but missed the postseason. Counsell did get a ton of production from the Cubs offense, but it took them too long to get going as they struggled for the first third of the 2024 MLB season.
Chicago White Sox – Gradey Sizemore: F
Even though Sizemore took over the White Sox midseason, everyone involved with Chicago this season is responsible for that disaster. \

Cincinnati Reds: Freddie Benavides: C
Benavides took over the Reds for the final six games and went 1-5. The Red’s former manager, David Bell, did a terrible job by starting the season hot and slowly letting it all slip away. The switch was needed.
Cleveland Guardians – Stephen Vogt: A-
The Guardians were the sleeper team of the MLB season, finishing second in the AL. Vogt had this team ready to go all season long and continued to quiet the doubters with win after win.
Colorado Rockies – Bud Black: D-
The Rockies’ pitching staff was horrible this season, and their offense could never keep up to produce wins. The Rockies didn’t stand this season, and Bud Black did nothing to improve it.
Detroit Tigers – A.J. Hinch: A-
The Tigers were the worst team to make the postseason offensively. But their bullpen has been lights out all season. The pitching staff saved their season, and Hinch deserves the credit for managing the rotation perfectly while struggling to score runs.
Houston Astros – Joe Espada: B+
It looked like the Astros era of dominating baseball was over in June. But in September, the Astros sat at the top of the AL West and were focused on the postseason. The midseason additions and lineup adjustments changed their year, so tip the cap to Espada for turning the team around.
Kansas City Royals – Matt Quatraro: B
Quatraro struggled as a manager offensively in 2024 as two players dragged Kansas City through the year. But he did a great job managing the bullpen, which saved the Royals multiple times when their offense struggled. Finding the playoffs and covering up your team’s weaknesses is the sign of a manager.
Los Angeles Angels – Ron Washington: D+
Being the Angels manager is a tricky thing to do. Your best player gets hurt every season, and you have to try and win without him. Washington had it rough but also made it no better.
Los Angeles Dodgers: Dave Roberts: A+
Dave Roberts did everything he could with his talent. It showed up in the way the Dodgers won, while multiple stars missed significant time. Los Angeles lost Freddie Freeman, Mookie Betts, Will Smith, and Max Muncy for weeks throughout the 2024 MLB season; the winning never stopped once.
Miami Marlins – John Marby: F
Marby started the 2024 MLB season with multiple former All-Stars and didn’t do anything but lose, lose, and lose some more. While he didn’t have the best roster in baseball, Miami shouldn’t have been near the bottom three teams in the league.
Milwaukee Brewers – Pat Murphy: A+
Anytime you win your division by ten games, like the Brewers, your manager is doing something right. Murphy had the Brewers playing well in all phases and got them right back into the postseason.
Minnesota Twins – Rocco Baldeli: C
The Twins showed much promise to make the postseason early in the year. Then they started losing more and more until they eventually missed the playoffs. Their top offense went cold, and their record did, too.
New York Mets – Carlos Mendoza: A
At the beginning of the year, the Mets looked pitiful. But after the All-Star break, Mendoza did his best work, which got New York into the postseason after an incredible 38-25 run.
New York Yankees – Aaron Boone: A+
When you have top talent, you have to produce top results. Aaron Boone did just that, getting the Yankees to the #1 overall seed, Judge to an AL MVP trophy, and New York back into World Series contention.
Oakland Athletics – Mark Kotsay: C
Kotsay had one job for the 2024 MLB season: to get the Athletics through it. The entire league knew it would be a tough year, and Kotsay did all he could with what he had.
Philadelphia Phillies – Rob Tomson: A
With a roster as good as the Phillies, Tomson did what was expected of him: win. The Phillies finished as a top-three team in the MLB with a top offense and defense ready to dominate in October.
Pittsburgh Pirates – Derek Shelton: B
2024 was about growth for the Pittsburgh Pirates, and they did just that. Their bullpen is revitalized with Paul Skenes, and their offense is waiting to add some sluggers this offseason. Pittsburgh has playoff potential next season.
San Diego Padres – Mike Shildt: A+
Shildt lost his best player in the offseason, Juan Soto. Then, they went most of the season without Fernando Tatis Jr., but they still got this team to a top-five record in the MLB. That’s A+ work.
San Francisco Giants – Bob Melvin: B-
Melvin is one of the most experienced managers in baseball, so it’s easy to see how he got this team to 80 wins. But without Melvin, this ball club might have only won 60 games.
Seattle Mariners – Dan Wilson: A+
Wilson took over a struggling Mariners team whose season looked close to over and pushed them right back into playoff contention. A+ job to get that much production out of a team whose offense struggled all 2024 MLB season.
St. Louis Cardinals – Oliver Marmol: C+
Managing a group of veterans in the MLB is a challenging task. But Marmol got the most out of his ball club as they finished four games above .500.
Tampa Bay Rays – Kevin Cash: C
Kevin Cash did a great job managing the bullpen but got no production from his offense this 2024 MLB season. Their weaknesses can be fixed, but he must find a way to compete in the AL East.
Texas Rangers – Bruce Bochy: F
Not only did the Rangers miss the postseason after winning a World Series, they didn’t even make it back to .500. Bochy did a horrible job with a championship roster.
Toronto Blue Jays – John Schneider: D
Schneider did nothing with an incredible roster this 2024 MLB season. Interestingly, the Blue Jays didn’t move on from him, but they will next season if Toronto starts slow.
Washington Nationals – Dave Martinez: B+
The Nationals front office backed Martinez and said they’d give him the veteran help he needed this offseason, so it’s safe to say he had a good year. But next year, he will be on the hot seat.
