Alex Bregman’s free agency rumors have been non-stop as teams continue to pursue the third baseman. Initially, the Yankees were in on Bregman, but they dropped out. The Red Sox, Tigers, Blue Jays, Astros, and Cubs are trying to acquire the slugger.
The Astros have increased their previous offer for Bregman, but the slugger is not interested. Scott Boras is trying to bring his client the best deal, but spring training is approaching. Bregman wants a long-term contract, but many teams find the price to be high.
The Cubs were all in on Alex Bregman to bolster their third base. Cubs fans were eagerly waiting for the team to bring in Breggy. However, Craig Counsell’s latest update will leave the team puzzled as they seem to have dropped out of the race. Counsell is all set to place Matt Shaw at third base, which means they are not too keen on Bregman.
“I think it’s just time for Matt to go out and play. Matt’s passed a lot of tests. He’s a talented young player. I think Matt’s got a shot at it, and there’s no question about it. He’s squarely in the mix, and he’s probably going to get the first shot at it. He is going to get the first shot at it,” confirmed Counsell.
The Cubs manager has given the rookie the green signal to step in and help the team out. Shaw has a great opportunity to prove himself at third base since Alex Bregman is slipping away.

Cubs Face Financial Struggle With Alex Bregman
It’s going to be tough for the Cubs to pursue Bregman, given that he wants close to $200 million. The franchise’s payroll is nearly Bregman’s money, having dropped from $230 million in 2024. Chicago would face financial complications if they go after Bregman.

Another option would be to give him a short-term deal with an opt-out. Again, with teams like the Tigers and Red Sox in the mix, the Cubs have a long shot. Hence, they are forced to turn internally to fill their position at third base.
It makes sense for the team to consider internal options at this moment. As Counsell suggests, Shaw is expected to take over the position. Apart from Alex Bregman, Nolan Arenado’s trade rumors seem to be picking up.
