Alex Bregman finds himself in a curious position this offseason. The veteran infielder saw one after the other teams being linked to him. But none could capitalize on the deal. Now that teams are getting sort of aggressive, the all-time Houston Astros star is attracting an NL central team.
As reported by MLB insider Jon Heyman, the Chicago Cubs have emerged as serious contenders in the pursuit of Bregman. According to Ragazzo, the Cubs are ont only keeping a keen interest in the third baseman, they are showing significant engagement. Although, the timing is relatively crucial as the free agency nears its conclusion.
“Astros and Cubs are believed showing significant interest in Alex Bregman, with Tigers and Red Sox among others involved. His longtime Astros team, also engaged at the start of winter, want him enough they may move Paredes to 2B and Altuve to LF to accommodate,” Heyman wrote.

While the Cubs considered using an internal solution at third base, the prospect of signing the talented Bregman could alter their trajectory. Meanwhile, top prospect Matt Shaw was ready to compete for the position. Jed Hoyer, the Cubs’ president of baseball operations, has hinted that Chicago might explore the option of recasting their infield.
Bringing in Bregman could provide a powerful one-two punch in the infield. That will happen only if the Cubs find Shaw better suited for second base. This strategic move would allow the Cubs to fill multiple needs at once. And potentially even facilitating a trade involving Nico Hoerner, who has been the subject of speculation this offseason.

The Tigers, fresh off a surprising playoff run that saw them eliminate the Astros, are keen to add proven talent to their young core. Bregman could provide the leadership and skill they need to transition from hopeful contenders to serious playoff threats.
However, as the competition heats up, the Tigers will likely need to enhance their offer to secure Bregman’s services. And particularly with Houston’s reported deal sitting around $150 million and possible overtures from the Boston Red Sox.
