After Jack Nicklaus, if the golf world saw dominance, it was when Tiger Woods swung his clubs on the golf courses. The California native won tournament after tournament to record joint-most wins on the PGA Tour. His brilliance wasn’t just limited to the Northern American golf circuit. In his almost three-decade-long career, he recorded 15 major championship victories!
Before June 18, 2000, Woods had already won all the major golf tournaments, except The Open Championship, at least once. But after June 18, 2000, he became a four-time major champion and claimed an achievement that started to be known as the “Tiger Slam.”
Tiger Woods’ first Open Championship victory was a wire-to-wire win. He led all three rounds and entered the final round with a six-stroke lead. Finally, he defeated Miguel Angel Jimenez and Ernie Els with a huge margin of eight strokes.
Who would have thought it was just the beginning? Woods eventually won The Open Championship three times in his career. What’s more interesting is that he defended the title in 2006 after winning it in 2005.
Tiger Woods Loves To Play At The Open Championship
While Woods has won all the major tournaments at least thrice in his career, he has always been expressive about his love for the Open Championship. He made 22 starts in the world’s oldest golf major and missed the cut only four times.
His official stats page on The Open Championship’s website quotes him as saying, ”You can have so many different weather conditions. That’s just one of the unique things about The Open and why it’s my favourite Major Championship.”
Tiger Woods will be making his 23rd appearance in the world’s oldest major on July 18, 2024. Since he has already missed the cut in his last two major starts, he will want to play all four rounds in his “most favorite” major tournament!
