PGA golfer Zach Johnson made headlines on Friday during the second round of the 2024 Masters tournament for all the wrong reasons.
Zach Johnson, who won the Masters 17 years ago, had a tough two-day trek out on Augusta this week. The 48-year-old missed the cut for the final two days of the tournament after shooting a disappointing +7.
Johnson’s performance at the tournament would have been forgotten rather quickly if not for a little incident on the 12th hole. After netting a triple bogey on the 12th hole (a par three), Johnson appeared to snap at the fans by telling them to “f**k off” after they offered cheers towards him for finishing the hole.

After the round, a reporter asked Zach Johnson about the incident. He claimed that his comments were not towards the patrons and were directed entirely at himself, per Brentley Romine of the Golf Channel.

“That I swore at the patrons? That’s laughable. That’s completely laughable. I can’t hear the patrons, number one. Number two, I just made a triple bogey on the 12th hole that evidently is going to make me miss the cut…If I’ve said anything, which I’m not going to deny…I apologize…it was directed towards myself entirely.”
Only 17 players in history have won multiple Masters titles, and Johnson again fell well short of reaching the special club this year. Bubba Watson last joined the club of multiple Masters winners back in 2014, having won the green jacket two years after claiming it for the first time.
Entering the third round on Saturday, Max Homa, Bryson DeChambeau and Scottie Scheffler were in a three-way tie for the lead at six under.
Zach Johnson Has Won Two Majors
Johnson has won two majors on the PGA tour, the 2007 Masters and the 2015 Open Championship. He also finished third in the 2010 PGA Championship, which Martin Kaymer won after he held off the aforementioned Bubba Watson in a three-hole playoff.
It’s been close to a decade since Johnson won the 2015 Open Championship, but the list of active golfers with multiple majors is relatively small. Even all-time greats like Tiger Woods (one major since 2009) and Phil Mickelson (one major since 2014) have found limited success there over the past decade.
Johnson will get a chance to win his third major next month. The 2024 PGA Championship will be held in Louisville, Kentucky from May 16 to 19.
