A new video seems to show what happened right after Scottie Scheffler was taken into custody.
Scheffler could be heard and seen in the video speaking with an officer from the rear of a patrol cruiser. Throughout the three-minute video, the top-ranked golfer in the world acts courteously and respectfully. He insists he had no idea the man ordering him to stop as he came into Valhalla Golf Club on May 17 was a police officer.
“You actually hurt him. And he’s a police officer. He’s got a huge scrape on his knee. He’s getting checked by EMS, big bruise,” an officer can be heard telling Scheffler, who called the situation a “big misunderstanding,” he said via Daily Mail.
“Sir, believe me, if I knew he was a police officer, I would have gotten out of the car,” Scheffler says in the clip.
“As you can see, I’m still shaking,” Scheffler continues. “I was afraid. I did not know who he was. He didn’t say ‘Police! Get out of the car!’ He just hit me with his flashlight and yelled ‘Get out of the car!'”
Scottie Scheffler landed in Louisville, Kentucky’s Valhalla Golf Club, for the second round of the PGA Championship two weeks ago. Due to an earlier deadly accident, traffic was heavy when he arrived at the club. It was for this reason that only players were permitted inside. Scheffler was stopped by police and told to get out of his car when he tried to drive forward and enter to be ready for his scheduled tee time. After being taken into custody, charged, and freed, he returned to the club just in time for the next round.

Scheffler was charged with second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic.
