Eight over par – when did Tiger Woods last have such a poor opening start in a golf major? His start in the opening round of The Open Championship reignites Colin Montgomerie’s call for the ace golfer’s retirement. However, the 15-time major champion gave a befitting reply to Europe’s former Ryder Cup-winning captain.
Ahead of the opening round at the Royal Troon Golf Club, Woods talked about Montgomerie’s retirement suggestions. In the press conference, the 48-year-old said,
“Well, as a past champion, I’m exempt until I’m 60. Colin is not. He is not a past champion, so he’s not exempt. So he doesn’t get the opportunity to make that decision.”
Woods received immense support from the fans with chants of “Prove Monty wrong” in the first round. However, the 15-time major champion’s game seemed dull, and he finished T138 on the leaderboard.
The 15-time major champion also seemed to walk fine at the Royal Troon Golf Club on Thursday. He also acknowledged that his fitness has been significantly better than it was at the start of the year.

Woods’ first-round scorecard saw him finish with eight over par 79 scores. He could manage to shoot only two birdies. Moreover, he carded six bogeys and two double bogeys.
It looks like Tiger Woods might not be able to “Prove Monty wrong” as he is most likely to miss the cut. However, the champion golfer, known for his unpredictable game, shooting a respectable under-par score on Friday can’t be ruled out.
