Bryson DeChambeau looked as if he would be cruising to an easy victory over the weekend until four-time major champion Rory McIlroy began to make an unbelievable comeback.
McIlroy turned a three-shot deficit into one, making birdies at No. 1 and No. 9 as many people began to tune in to what was going on.
Seeking to break a 10-year major championship drought, Rory McIlroy fell short in the most painful way possible as he missed two short putts in the closing holes.
He threw away a two-shot lead over DeChambeau with five holes to play.
His anger was understandable, but Rory handled the situation in the wrong way.
McIlroy, who also lost by a shot in this same tournament last year, watched on a TV in the recorder’s hut as DeChambeau cemented the day with an insane shot from a bunker on the 18th.
Rory McIlroy immediately headed to the parking lot with his entourage before his rival had even signed his scorecard. He was then seen speeding away from the media and driving to Moore County Airport. He was gone so quickly that he was in his private jet less than an hour after DeChambeau finished his four-footer for glory to win, per CBS.
