Tiger Woods won his first PGA Championship in 1999, his second career major. He defended his title in 2000 and won the tournament in consecutive years again in 2006 and 2007.
If he emerges victorious at Valhalla, Woods will move into a three-way tie with the late Walter Hagen and Jack Nicklaus for the most PGA Championship tournament wins. Hagen and Nicklaus both won it five times.
Brooks Koepka won the event last year, marking his third PGA Championship win and fifth major victory. The 34-year-old Koepka also won the PGA Championship won the event back-to-back years in 2018 and 2019.
Tiger Woods Looks To Win Sweet 16th Major
Only the aforementioned Jack Nicklaus (18) has won more major championship victories than Woods (15). The latter looked poised to break Nicklaus’ record after winning the 2008 U.S. Open, bringing Woods’ total to 14.
But a long list of injuries and personal life issues (including his highly-publicized divorce with Elin Nordegren) sidelined Woods for lengthy periods of time over the next decade. Woods pulled off a remarkable comeback story by winning his 15th major at the age of 43 at the 2019 Masters, ending an 11-year drought.
Another interesting note before Thursday rolls around: Woods needs just one more victory to break the record he shares with Sam Snead (82 wins) for most wins ever on the PGA Tour.
