PGA golf star Rory McIlroy made headlines last month when it was reported that he and his wife, Erica Stoll, are divorcing after seven years of marriage.
Four-time majors winner Rory McIlroy and Erica Stoll, a former PGA of America worker, started dating nine years ago. The two eventually tied the knot in 2017 and have a daughter together.
It was reported last month that McIlroy filed for divorce from Stoll in Palm Beach County, Florida. McIlroy reportedly had his friend, private investigator and former police officer Carl Woods, go to Stoll’s home to deliver the divorce papers.
According to a report from the Daily Mail, Stoll missed Sunday’s deadline to contest the divorce from Rory McIlroy. As such, it appears as though the divorce will soon be finalized without significant hurdles:
“Erica, 36, was served the papers at her Florida home on May 13 and given the state’s standard 20-calendar day window to lodge her answer. But she missed Sunday’s cutoff and hasn’t filed anything at all since then, an official with the Palm Beach County Clerk’s office confirmed to DailyMail.com.
That leaves Erica, the mother of McIloy’s three-year-old daughter Poppy, at risk of having the court grant the superstar golfer a default divorce. If a default is entered, the case can continue without participation by the defaulted party.
The case would then continue without her having an opportunity to contest the Irishman’s May 13 petition which describes their seven-year marriage as ‘irretrievably broken.'”

The divorce proceedings haven’t affected McIlroy’s performance on the greens. He finished in a tie for fifth at the 2024 PGA Championship with a score of -5; the tournament was won by Xander Schauffele with a -9 finish.
Rory McIlroy also finished in a tie for fourth at least week’s RBC Canadian Open with a tremendous score of -13 under. Robert MacIntyre of Scotland won the event with a -16 score, one stroke ahead of American Ben Griffin.
Rory McIlroy Shifts Focus To Fifth Major
The 35-year-old McIlroy was on a special run in the first half of his professional career, winning four majors between 2011 and 2014. He won the PGA Championship in 2012 and 2014, The Open in 2014 and the U.S. Open in 2011.
But McIlroy has been snake-bitten on the greens ever since, having failed to secure that elusive fifth championship for a decade (and counting). If he needs inspiration, look no further than Tiger Woods, who won the 2019 Masters to snap his 11-year drought without a major.
McIlroy will get another crack at major victory No. 5 next week when he tees off at the 2024 U.S. Open in Pinehurst, North Carolina.
