More information has come out in the tragic car accident that took the lives of six students and a head coach of a college golf team. The University of the Southwest men’s and women’s golf teams were traveling back from a tournament when the accident occurred in Texas. Two members of the golf team are in critical condition at the hospital.
“The University of the Southwest can confirm that there has been a fatal bus accident involving the USW men’s and women’s golf teams,” the school said in a statement. “The university is currently attempting to notify family member of those involved in the accident.”
National Transportation Safety Board Vice Chairman Bruce Landsberg revealed horrifying details of the accident that showed a 13-year-old was behind the wheel of a pickup truck that crashed into the van which held the golf team.
The 17-passenger van carrying the golf teams collided with a pickup truck head-on after the truck veered into the van’s lane in western Texas, killing people in both vehicles.
The Associated Press added more details:
“One must be 14 in Texas to start taking classroom courses for a learner’s license and 15 to receive that provisional license to drive with an instructor or licensed adult in the vehicle. Department of Public Safety Sgt. Victor Taylor said a 13-year-old driving would be breaking the law.”
