Rory McIlroy’s time and luck haven’t been kind to him lately. Just a month before the US Open in June 2024, he and his wife, Erica Stoll, filed a divorce case. After a heartbreaking loss at Pinehurst, the Northern Irishman may have lost his long-awaited fifth major title but reconciled with his wife.
However, amidst all the drama in his life, McIlroy has found some pleasing moments ahead of his comeback event, the Scottish Open. Ahead of his title defense at Renaissance Club, the founder, Jerry Sarvadi, announced installing a plaque at the 18th hole. As quoted by Golfweek, he said, “We just did it today. We’re going to tell him when he gets here.”
The Plaque Is a Symbol Of Rory McIlroy’s Career’s Best Shot
Unlike his recent collapsing loss at the US Open, McIlroy made no mistakes at the Scottish Open in 2023. When Robert McIntyre pulled out an exceptional performance in the final round to finish 14 under par, the Northern Irishman had to hit a birdie to avoid a playoff match.
After shooting his tee shot on the 18th hole, McIlroy was still very far from the flagstick. He pulled a 2-iron off his bag and covered a massive 200-yard distance, leaving him only 11 feet off the hole. Eventually, McIlroy carded a brilliant birdie to pick up his 24th PGA Tour title.
He said, ‘When I turn 80, it will be one of the five best shots I hit in my entire career.’
Rory McIlroy will return to golf after a three-week break at the Scottish Open, which kicks off on July 11. It will be interesting to see if he can defend his title at Renaissance Club.
