After suffering a mild stroke in early November, Popovich has been away from the organization. In his absence, assistant coach Mitch Johnson took the reins as head coach. The 75-year-old veteran last coached the Spurs on November 2 during a game against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Following that game, it became clear that something was amiss, leading to his absence from the subsequent road trip. The Spurs confirmed on November 13 that Popovich had suffered a mild stroke. Though they reassured everyone that he was expected to make a full recovery. Since that announcement, the team has kept the public informed about his rehabilitation, emphasizing the positive trajectory of his recovery process.

The Spurs Shared Update On Gregg Popovich’s Behalf Last Month
Last month, the Spurs shared a hopeful update regarding head coach Gregg Popovich’s health. Following the mild stroke he suffered on November 2, Popovich expressed optimism about his recovery.

His age and the nature of the incident have made the journey challenging. But his resilience shines through in his statements, emphasizing gratitude for the overwhelming support he has received during this tough period.
“This has certainly been an unexpected six weeks for my family and me. As we work together on my recovery, I want to take a moment to share that the outpouring of support we’ve received during this time has been truly overwhelming in the best possible way. While I wish I could get back to each and every one of you, for now, let me say that my family and I are forever grateful. We’re thankful for our wonderful community, the entire Spurs organization, and our family and friends,” he said in his statement.
