English rugby player Joe Marler might be soon staring at a ban after he was seen grabbing an opponent’s genitals.
This incident took place during the Six Nations match between England and Wales over the weekend when Marler could be viewed taking his hand and purposely grabbing and squeezing the groin area of Welsh captain Alun Wyn Jones.
Via The Guardian:
“Marler will attend a disciplinary hearing on Thursday and if found guilty he can expect a ban of at least 12 weeks.
Jones, for his part, took issue with the incident, calling on the authorities to act, and Marler has now been cited under World Rugby’s law that states players must not “grab, twist or squeeze the genitals”. While examples of similar incidents are rare, the London Irish lock George Robson was banned for six weeks in 2016 for grabbing an opponent’s testicles.”
Jones had this to say after the incident:
“Joe’s a good bloke,” he said.
“Lots of things happen on a rugby field. My question is, it’s difficult as a captain these days because you can’t speak to a ref about anything it feels. I look at the touch judge, obviously he didn’t see what happened and that’s fine.
“But there’s a lot of footage that’s been shown obviously. It seems there’s a lot of supporters that saw what happened. It’s just very frustrating, the fact that we talk a lot about TMOs (television match officials) and footage review but there doesn’t seem to be a lot of it happening (during the game).”
