The opening week of high school football in California got off to a very strange start, with a PA announcer caught slagging off a player and calling him some vulgar names on a hot mic.
Mater Dei vs. Corona Centennial went down at the Santa Ana Bowl on Thursday night and was pretty entertaining for the folks who tuned in via the stream as the announcer was heard calling a certain player a “dumb***” and an “a**hat while calling the game.
Mater Dei will be fined $600 for providing an alternate stream, given that it violates the CIF’s media rights to NFHS Network, who had exclusive rights to the match.
It appears the school either forgot about their agreement or didn’t care because over 1,000 viewers tuned into the live stream.
As a consequence, the Mater Dei announcer had some embarrassing comments go live. He was heard yelling at a defensive player, asking him to turn around. He then switched to the stadium microphone to report: “Pass intended for #11, Tyler George. Incomplete. Penalty markers down.”
The PA man was apparently unaware that his voice could be heard through the stream even if it didn’t blare through the stadium speakers.

“Turn around, you dumba**,” he was heard shouting. “Read his eyes.”

The Mater Dei High School Football Announcer Was In Quite A Foul Mood
Unfortunately for everyone involved, that wasn’t all. The announcer claimed he was being redundant for calling a teenager a “dumba**,” so he switched to the other term instead.
“I don’t know why I’m calling a 16-year-old a dumba**,” he added. “Kind of redundant. … more a**hat.”
On a brighter note where Mater Dei is concerned, they beat Corona Centennial pretty convincingly, running out to a 42-25 win.
