ESPN host Sam Ponder has shared an opinion on transgender athletes and women’s sports, taking issue with a video message from trans swimmer Lia Thomas calling for the protection of trans athletes competing at the high school and college levels.
“It breaks my heart to see trans kids across the country lose out on these opportunities,” Thomas said in the video. “All transgender kids deserve the opportunity to compete and play in the sports they love without compromising who they are.”
Ponder took to Twitter to respond to the plea, asking for women’s sports to be saved as she pointed out that biological women and girls could lose certain opportunities as a result of transgender participants.
“This would take away so many opportunities for biological women and girls in sports,” she wrote. “It is a shame that we are needing to fight for the integrity of Title IX in 2023 and the reason it was needed in the first place. #savewomensports.”
Ponder is likely to be among the few to speak out against transgenders having an unfair advantage in women’s sports as far as ESPN is concerned. However, her colleague, Sage Steele, tweeted something similar on Tuesday.
