Movie enthusiasts have long wondered what Kevin McCallister’s parents from the ‘Home Alone’ films did for a living.
The title and its sequel, ‘Home Alone 2: Lost In New York,’ are two of the most iconic Christmas films ever made and remain popular to this day.
Macaulay Culkin returns to screens as the aforementioned McCallister boy every holiday season, which is why people keep asking what his parents, Peter and Kate, did for work. After all, they lived in a huge house in the Chicago suburbs and could have afforded to travel to France for Christmas.
The house was worth around $1 million in the late 1980s and the first movie launched in 1990. It would probably be worth significantly more in 2024.
Kevin’s parents, Peter and Kate, were played by the late John Heard and Catherine O’Hara, who were both successful in their careers. According to director Chris Columbus, who revealed as much to The Hollywood Reporter, Peter may have worked in advertising, while Kate was a fashion designer.
“Back then, John and I had a conversation about it, and we decided on what the jobs were,” Columbus said. Catherine O’Hara’s Kate McCallister “was a very successful fashion designer.”

Kevin’s Parents From ‘Home Alone’ Were Not Criminals
While he could not remember exactly what they discussed about Peter’s career, Columbus was able to rule out organized crime, which had actually been a theory given that they attracted such desperate criminals.
“Not organized crime — even though there was, at the time, a lot of organized crime in Chicago,” he added.
Both films were huge box office hits. The first movie made $4470 at the global box office, and the second made close to $360 million, sums which were worth significantly more back then.
Now we just need to know for sure what Tommy from ‘Martin’ did for a living…
