Mike McDaniel just might be the smartest head coach in the NFL. And if this latest supposed move works out, it would certainly add another impressive line to his growing resume.
When the Miami Dolphins traded for former Chicago Bears wideout Chase Claypool, many wondered why they would do such a thing. After all, the Dolphins already have a ton of talent at the wide receiver position — and there’s only so many targets to go around. How could they possibly make good use of Claypool with such a crowded receiver room?
McDaniel later explained that he wanted Claypool because he’s “fast,” but it appears there could be more to this.
According to NFL insider Jonathan Jones, the Dolphins could consider using Claypool at the tight end position.
At the moment, Durham Smythe is currently listed as the top tight end on the Dolphins’ depth chart. He’s produced some pretty underwhelming numbers so far this season, with 11 catches and 123 yards through four games.
At 6’4″ and 238-pounds, Claypool certainly has the size to make it as an NFL tight end. The question is whether his unwillingness to block at times will prevent the Dolphins from being able to use him in such a position.

Unfortunately, we won’t get an better idea of Mike McDaniel’s plans for Claypool this weekend, as the former Steelers first-round pick is not expected to suit up following the quick turnaround after his trade.
We should get a better idea of what Claypool’s role will be when the Dolphins resume practice ahead of their week 6 game against the Carolina Panthers.
