Following the retirement of Tom Brady, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers started their search to find their next starting quarterback.
The last time we saw footage from Baker Mayfield in practice, it was not a good look.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback is in the midst of a quarterback battle with Kyle Trask for the starting job. Based on the video from today, it looks like he might be ahead in that race.
Bucs insider Rick Stroud shared a video showing the former Cleveland Browns quarterback taking snaps and throwing the ball around with a little more accuracy.
The most important position the Buccaneers will settle in training camp is, of course, starting quarterback. Trask has the edge of two years in Tampa but Mayfield has significantly more NFL experience. However, both had to start at the beginning in learning the system being installed by new Offensive Coordinator Dave Canales.
Appearing on SportsCenter on Sunday, ESPN’s Jeff Darlington stated that Mayfield may have an edge over Trask due to what the quarterbacks have inside them rather than how they are performing on the field.

“In general, we’re hearing the words that have been used to describe Baker Mayfield since the start of his career. The positive ones, like moxie and leadership. And those are the things so far in Tampa it feels like could earn him the starting job. There is just definitely a little bit more of a vibe when I talk to people about these two quarterbacks, that Baker seems to be imposing himself. Now, Kyle Trask is still on the hunt. There is no determination on who the starter will be in this quarterback competition. But at this point, it does feel that Baker is imposing himself over the competition.”
It is still a bit too early to declare either Mayfield or Trask as the starter, but things are trending in the right direction for Mayfield. It seems Baker will be the guy for the Bucs’ week one in Minnesota against the Vikings thanks to his confidence, moxie, leadership, and overall experience at being an NFL starting quarterback.
This may be his final chance to show that he can be a starter in the league after failing in Cleveland.
Mayfield signed a heavily incentive-laden, one-year deal with the Buccaneers in March after a tumultuous 2022 season. If he wins the quarterback competition, it will give him another shot at leading a team in the NFC South.
