Several high-profile boxing matchups happened in June. Gervonta Davis, David Benavidez, Teofimo Lopez, and Jesse Rodriguez secured victories. It seems the boxing world will rejoice more in July. Shakur Stevenson will take on fellow Rio Olympic medalist Artem Harutyunyan at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
Olympic Medalists Meet in the Ring for WBC Lightweight Title
Shakur Stevenson will be looking to defend his WBC lightweight title against Artem Harutyunyan on Saturday, July 6. The main event will likely begin at 11 PM Eastern time, and ESPN+ will livestream it in the United States.
Stevenson had won the title vacated by Devin Haney in his last bout against Edwin De Los Santos via unanimous decision. On the other hand, Harutyunyan is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Frank Martin, who recently lost his undefeated record to Gervonta Davis.
Interestingly, Stevenson and Harutyunyan won medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics. The American won the silver medal in the bantamweight division, while the Armenian-born pugilist won a bronze medal for Germany at light welterweight.
The fight is the final one under Stevenson’s current contract with Top Rank. Therefore, the 27-year-old wants to make a statement to land a new big deal with Top Rank or other promoters. With several exciting fights on the undercard, the event promises to showcase fireworks.
