Manny Pacquiao, boxing’s only eight-division champion, had announced his retirement from the sport after losing to Yordenis Ugas in 2021. However, ‘Pacman’ fought an exhibition matchup against DK Yoo in December 2022.
Pacquiao, who won several accolades as the best boxer of the twenty-first century’s first decade, had earlier revealed he was in discussions to fight Mario Barrios. Mauricio Sulaiman, the WBC President, seems to like the idea.
Pacquiao Targets WBC Title in Comeback Fight with Barrios
Sulaiman recently spoke with SkySports in an exclusive interview. The WBC head honcho seemed delighted at the idea of Pacquiao returning to fight Barrios. The Filipino legend had earlier delighted the fans with his revelation of returning to boxing.
WBC elevated Mario Barrios to full-fledged champion after Terence Crawford moved up to fight Israil Madrimov on Riyadh Season’s fight card in Los Angeles. With Pacquiao hoping to fight Barrios, he will get the opportunity to become a WBC champion again, two decades after he won the sanctioning body’s flyweight title.
“As a former champion and as a legend, he does have the possibility of fighting for the WBC championship,” said Mauricio Sulaiman, revealing his interest in making the fight happen between the Filipino legend and the 29-year-old American.
He also called Pacquiao a timeless legend and revealed that medical examinations are the only hurdle in the fight. If the Filipino legend passes it, the WBC will give the green signal for the 45-year-old to challenge Barrios for the WBC lightweight title.
