Everyone underestimated Ryan Garcia due to his shenanigans in the build-up to his bout with Devin Haney. But the Californian surprised everyone by performing remarkably in opposition to “The Dream.” The world of combat sports was captivated by the boxing match. UFC Bantamweight Champion Sean O’Malley’s name stood out among the many UFC competitors who responded to the bout.
Haney suffered his first career loss and lost the WBC super lightweight title, although Garcia could not win the belt because he missed weight.
Last night, on Saturday, April 20, 2024, Ryan Garcia won a huge upset victory by dominating Devin Haney from pillar to post and delivering “The Dream”, his first-ever professional defeat via majority decision within Brooklyn, New York’s Barclays Center.
The whole combat sports community, including former double champion Conor McGregor (see his thoughts here) and current Bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley (who genuinely wants to fight “King”), tuned in to watch Haney vs. Garcia.

O’Malley said in an Instagram video. “Very impressive fight from Ryan, he was using interesting technique. He would throw his left hook, which is very nice. He’d throw his left hook and instantly turn his back and couldn’t get hit … good fight.”
Garcia gave a near-perfect performance, although he repeatedly applied a shoulder roll that didn’t seem to work very well, giving Haney the cold shoulder. Throughout the fight, the referee gave Garcia multiple warnings but failed to dock him points for his unusual tactic.
Even so, Garcia and O’Malley have been sparring for a few months, with Garcia offering to engage in mixed martial arts (MMA) combat. O’Malley was sold, but the UFC’s 135-pound god changed his mind following Garcia’s dubious actions before his bout with Haney.
