The potential fight between Terence Crawford and Canelo Alvarez is hands down the biggest “what if” in boxing right now. Both are currently the biggest face of the sport—Crawford’s still unbeaten, while Canelo has established himself as a Mexican boxing legend. Talking about their fight, promoters like Eddie Hearn and Saudi Arabia’s entertainment head, Turki Alalshik, are keen to make this showdown happen. With all the hype around the fight potentially happening, Crawford’s been flexing hard, saying he’s got the skills to take down the unified middleweight champ, Canelo.
Canelo recently secured a unanimous decision win against Edgar Berlanga at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. After the fight, fans were buzzing about the Mexican star’s next move, with names like David Benavidez and ‘Bud’ Crawford being thrown around as potential opponents. Recently, when asked about a possible fight with Canelo, Crawford confidently told TMZ Sports,
“I feel as if that’s a legacy fight, I feel as if this is the biggest fight in boxing today. I’ve been fighting bigger guys my whole life. Of course I’ll beat him. It ain’t no doubt in my mind that I won’t beat anybody that I step in the ring with.”
Crawford became a four-time world champion in early August after defeating Israil Madrimov at the BMP Stadium during the Riyadh Season. Following this victory, ‘Bud’ cemented his status as one of the greatest in boxing. He then announced his departure from the 147-pound division to focus on future opportunities. On top of that, Alalshikh confirmed he’s working with Crawford to get Canelo on board for a fight. However, Canelo seems hesitant, reportedly put off by the way Alalshikh approached him about the matchup.
Canelo Alvarez Rejects Terence Crawford Fight Proposal, Citing Issues with Turki Alalshikh’s Approach
Alalshikh had the Crawford vs. Canelo fight at the top of his boxing wishlist and even made an offer to the Mexican superstar. However, after a communication breakdown with Canelo, the proposal was withdrawn, as Canelo wasn’t a fan of Alalshikh’s approach. Additionally, following Canelo’s recent win against Edgar Berlanga, the Mexican legend addressed Crawford’s video call-out during a post-fight interview, and the Mexican legend responded.
“No comment, “All I want to do is rest right now,” he said of his future. I want to enjoy my victory, I want to enjoy my family who I missed a lot. And then I’m going to get together with my people and decide who’s next.”
