There’s a viral photo going around from the Mike Tyson-Peter McNeeley 1995 fight that has the sports world buzzing.
Contrary to what you’ll see in popular movies such as the Back to the Future film trilogy or Hot Tub Time Machine, we all know that time travel certainly isn’t possible. But observers noticed something very interesting in the aforementioned Tyson-McNeeley bout.
As you can see in the photo below, it looks as if a fan in the audience is holding a modern-day looking cell phone that, obviously, wasn’t available in the 90s.
This viral photo and story has been picked up by multiple media outlets, with some fans suggesting that the person with the device is indeed a time travelers.
Sorry to break it to you, conspiracy theorists. But as noted in this 2016 article from 9News Australia, that’s not actually a cell phone the fan is holding. The spectator is actually holding a camera which resembles a modern cell phone.

If you google the Logitech Fotoman, Casio QV-100 or Casio QV-10A models, you’ll see that they all look a lot like the device that the spectator is holding.
So no. Doctor Emmitt Brown from Back to the Future did not lend his DeLorean time machine to a fan so they could go back in time and see Tyson fight McNeeley. But it’s a fun thought nonetheless, especially for the ones genuinely hoping to see time travel come to life.
Tyson, the former Undisputed Heavyweight Champion, won the highly-anticipated bout via disqualification in the first-round after McNeeley’s manager entered the ring to prevent his client from suffering further damage.
