After Valdez gambled too much by throwing an overhand left that put him in a vulnerable position, Stevenson took advantage of the situation to turn what had been an even battle through five rounds into a one-man show. Taking control of the fight, Stevenson swiftly countered and floored Valdez with a fast left to the temple.

Oscar Valdez vs Emanuel Navarrete: WBO super-featherweight champion Emanuel “Vaquero” Navarrete prevailed over Oscar Valdez in a savage bout involving only Mexican fighters.
Valdez began landing counter left hooks in the fifth and sixth rounds. A brawl broke out in the middle of the ring during the tenth round, and both combatants traded blows to win the remaining rounds. In a back-and-forth brawl versus Valdez at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona, the 28-year-old prevailed by unanimous decision.
But in the championship rounds, Navarrete maintained his advantage and held onto his title with scores of 116–112, 118–110, and 119–109.
