The fight between Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney is one of the most controversial boxing matches of the year. Despite the buzz surrounding the controversy, boxing promoter Oscar De La Hoya isn’t interested in a rematch due to the low PPV numbers. The controversy began at the weigh-ins when Garcia came in overweight, and the rest is history.
After it was revealed that Ryan Garcia used performance-enhancing drugs and failed a drug test, Devin Haney’s father, Bill Haney, took action to defend his son’s reputation. Devin Haney then filed a lawsuit against Garcia, seeking damages for battery, fraud, and breach of contract. Bill Haney has also expressed interest in a rematch with Garcia.
However, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya responded to the lawsuit related to their April 2024 bout in a video posted on social media. In the video, De La Hoya criticized the Haneys, revealing that they had also named Golden Boy Promotions in the lawsuit for a full accounting of the fight. In the video he said,
“They want to see my books. don’t believe the fact that Garcia-Haney only did a little over 300,000 homes and they have been paid what they are owed. They want more money that does not exist. This fight just didn’t sell.”
Oscar De La Hoya Responds to Haney Family’s Lawsuit Against Golden Boy
De La Hoya took to social media to lash out as the Haney family escalated their lawsuit. Golden Boy Promotions, led by De La Hoya, organized the April 2024 fight between Haney and Garcia, which became one of the year’s most controversial bouts. Bill Haney has since filed legal action, demanding additional revenue and a full accounting from Golden Boy Promotions.
The fight, held on April 20, 2024, saw Garcia knock down Haney four times and win by majority decision. However, after the discovery that Garcia had used the banned substance Ostarine, resulting in a one-year suspension, Haney sued Garcia for battery, fraud, and breach of contract. In a video the boxing promoter said,

“Enough is enough. Every fighter who has worked with Golden Boy has always been paid exactly what they are owed and given all documents they were entitled to. Period. Any suggestion to the contrary is simply false. If the Haneys are still having trouble understanding their contract, we will be happy to walk them through it, again.”
So far, the Haney camp has not responded to the situation, though reports suggest that ‘The Dream’ earned 47% of the fight’s profits. Both De La Hoya and Garcia have addressed Haney’s lawsuit on social media, but a rematch remains uncertain, leaving fans unsure if Garcia and Haney will face off again.
