In New York, Josh Taylor lost the last of his world titles to Teofimo Lopez, who emerged victorious as the new WBO light-welterweight champion.
Since a contentious defence against Jack Catterall 15 months ago, the 32-year-old Scot has forfeited three of his titles, and he lost the fourth in a fierce match at Madison Square Garden.
The champion’s strong start was pushed back by American Lopez, who went on to dominate the fight and hand Taylor his first loss in 20 professional fights.
With the victory, Lopez, 25, was crowned a two-weight world champion.
Although the Edinburgh fighter was fortunate to have a generous judge rule against Catterall, the Brooklyn fighter’s scorecards read 115-113, 115-113, and 117-111, indicating that he would never be as fortunate twice.
Josh Taylor suffered his first and only defeat of his career. On June 10, 2023, Taylor was defeated by American boxer Teófimo López by unanimous decision after 12 rounds. Taylor was 32 and had a 19-0 record when defending his super-lightweight WBO and The Ring titles. López had an 18-1 record and was 25 years old.
