Jake Paul and Nate Diaz have both been handed suspensions following their boxing match on Saturday night at the American Airlines Center… But it’s not what you think.
Both fighters were handed 31-day medical suspensions by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. In total, 18 fighters were handed suspensions, with the longest being a 61 day ban for William Silva after he was knocked out in the fourth round of his bout with Ashton Sylve.
As for Diaz and Paul, their bans fall right around the average mark, as both fighters battled it out in a tough fight that went the distance. In the end, it was Jake Paul emerging victorious via unanimous decision.
These post-fight suspensions are common following fights, as the commission ofter administers medical examinations to determine when the fighters may be fit to enter the ring again. Sometimes fighters may come back before their suspension is over if they’re deemed fit by a doctor, while other fighters could find their suspensions extended if their injuries don’t subside.
The suspensions to Paul and Diaz (as well as the other fighters) has nothing to do with performance-enhancing drugs, despite recent claims that Paul might be juicing.
Paul and Diaz have expressed interest in having a rematch, only this time in the MMA cage. Once their medical bans are up, we’ll see if they decide to go forward with it.
