In a boxing showdown between Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia, the American boxer clinched victory by majority decision after knocking Haney down in rounds 7, 10, and 11. However, the win was clouded by controversy when the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association revealed that Garcia had tested positive for Ostarine, a prohibited substance. Recently, Garcia discussed his potential retirement on X, which stunned his fans.
Ryan Garcia’s Doping Scandal and Retirement Speculations
On May 1, the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association announced that Ryan Garcia tested positive for Ostarine, a banned substance. Both the day before and the day of his fight against Devin Haney. Garcia denied the allegations and expressed his readiness to undergo additional testing to prove his innocence.
The New York State Athletic Commission is deliberating whether to change the fight’s result to a No-Contest or to disqualify Garcia and award the win to Devin Haney. Garcia recently announced his retirement from boxing following his victory over Haney nearly two months ago.
Despite the efforts of his legal team to argue that the consumption was unintentional and that the detected doses were minimal, the investigation remains ongoing. A decision from the New York Commission is expected this week.
Recently, Haney suggested that Garcia could face a two-year suspension for testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs). Through his attorney, Haney sent a formal letter to the NYSAC, urging them to reconsider his loss and potentially change it to a disqualification or no contest due to Garcia’s failed drug tests.
The New York State Athletic Commission will decide Garcia’s fate this week as they review his two positive tests for the banned substance. Till then, Garcia’s boxing future remains uncertain.
